Canada's ocean space was divided into 12 bioregions through a national science advisory process in 2009, based on existing biogeographical classification systems and principles. These bioregions provide the spatial planning framework for Canada's national network of MPAs. Two bioregions overlap the Newfoundland and Labrador Region.
Two bioregions (NL Shelves and Gulf of St. Lawrence) border the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and MPA Network development in underway in both of these areas:
A Working Group will provide regional coordination and policy development to guide MPA Network planning within the NL Shelves Bioregion. A Regional Strategy has been developed as a tool for engaging stakeholders in MPA Network development within the NL Shelves Bioregion. Government is expected to approve this draft Strategy as consultation ready in the fall of 2014, and once the document is approved, it will then be available at the link below:
Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region will lead MPA Network planning within the Gulf of St. Lawrence Bioregion with input from the Newfoundland and Labrador Region and the Gulf Region.
